It’s half way through Winter and I feel like shedding my skin, snake-style. It can’t be just me who wants to literally scrub off a layer, so I popped together three tea and sugar scrub recipes using ingredients that you most probably have in your cupboard. I hope you like them. xoxo
Are you a fan of fancy sugar scrub that smells like mermaids? Of course you are.
You know when people (bloggers) say, "hey girl, you can totally make this in five minutes," then an hour later, your kitchen is trashed, you have spent $70 in materials, you have crap in you hair and you really just want a stiff drink. Yeah, this isn't one of those recipes.
You can actually make this in less than 5 minutes and it will cost you two tablespoons of coconut oil, half a cup of sugar and two tea bags.
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
At this point of winter I tend to start feeling a little weighed down, you know what I mean? Cold weather and covering clothing can really make your skin feel, well, a bit crap. So I made three separate body scrubs, using three different types of tea. Chai, peppermint and green tea. Because tea isn't just good for your insides you know?
First I'm going to tell you how to make the scrub but I have also listed some of the benefits of each tea below.
*Disclaimer I'm no Hogwarts herbology professor so please feel free to let me know their other cool benefits.
Ingredients
Two tablespoons of coconut oil.
Half a cup of sugar, you can use any type you want, I used raw.
The dry contents of two tea bags.
Directions
I just popped all the ingredients in a magic bullet style blender and mixed it for 30 seconds. I wanted to make the sugar finer because it was a bit chunky for my liking before blending, but each to their own. If you're using it on your neck and hands, chunky sugar could irritate the skin. You can totally just mix it up with a spoon if you are using it on less sensitive skin like your feet or legs.
Now what?
Apply the scrub to wet skin, scrub it around gently (if you're up for a deep exfoliation you need to use it for longer, not press harder) then wash it off after about five minutes.
You can also pop these into little jars and give them as gifts, I used the mini quilted jars from Just Jars, they were the perfect size.
And why are we using tea?
Chai Tea; It is no coincidence that there are a heap of chai based skin products on the market right now, apart from smelling awesome, it is full of black tea (antioxidants) and spices that are linked to increasing circulation and making inflammation relax a bit. This scrub was my favourite, it made my skin feel all tingly and alive. Seriously, I can't think of a better word to describe the feeling. And the smell, oh the perfection.
Green Tea; Green tea has been the buzz-tea in skincare for the past few years, and it seems for good reason. It is jam packed with antioxidants (like most teas) and there have been heaps of studies about its benefits when it comes to UV protection. The results are varied but it can't hurt right? The one study that came out super positively is its effectiveness in reducing the redness in Rosecia sufferers. This one was the least fragrant of the three and made my skin feel really calm after, not crazy tingling or anything, just…um…zen?
Peppermint Tea; This fresh little puppy does all sorts of fancy stuff to your skin, it can help balance the PH levels – getting the oil that causes break-outs under control. It also works as a natural antiseptic and anti inflammatory. ANNNND it is known to reduce cellulite and kill athletes foot, not that you would need that thought…I used this one on my feet and I love the cold feeling you get after. It's so refreshing for toes that have been in socks for the last two months.

Love this…especially the part about visiting $70 and ending in a mess-I’ve been there and thankfully your recipe is not one of these! Chai scrub…I’ve got some chai in the pantry, definitely going to try this. I’ll love the smell of myself (too much) 😀

Excited to give this a try! x

I quite like a salt scrub. Do you think some of the sugar can be substituted for salt?

Once the kidlets are in bed, I’m totally raiding the tea cannisters in my pantry. Thanks for the hot tips.
