DIY Hair Mask – Coconut oil, honey & gelatine

January 22, 2014

DIY Hair Mask guaranteed to make you look and smell like a mermaid – Presuming they smell like honey and coconut.

DIY Hair Mask - coconut oil, gelatine and honey

Salt water, shampoo, sun, GHD, wind, brush, dry, wash, swim, sun, ponytail, knots. Summer is harsh on hair (so is winter actually) so I have been experimenting with DIY hair masks and I have just stumbled on a winner!

Recipe/Directions

Just mix one tablespoon of coconut oil, one tablespoon of honey and a teaspoon on gelatine with 60ml of boiling water.

Give it a quick whisk and put it in the fridge for 5 mins. When you take it out, give it a quick mix and it should look like the picture below. If you have a lot of hair just double the recipe.

Then, work it into your damp hair and pop a shower cap on or cling wrap your head for however long you want – I left it for about half an hour – then wash and shampoo your hair as normal.

Why?

The honey helps to smooth and moisturise the hair and because it has anti-bacterial properties it can prevent all sorts of gross scalp issues. The coconut oil moisturises (obvs) and leaves your hair smelling freakin amazing and the gelatine is full of protein so it strengthens and increases body. It is also rumored to help your hair grow long and thick, there is no proof though. I actually found it turned the consistency of the mix quite sticky making it harder to spread but it really held on to my hair so that was a win.

Then…

While you're feeling like a DIY pamper queen, go check out my recipes for a DIY Chocolate Face Mask and DIY Strawberry Foot Scrub. Oh and if you have got this far I'm guessing you are in a pretty keen so why not get totally Martha/Macgyver and make some DIY Nail Stickers from paper and clear nail polish. Or you could just watch Girls and vedge on the couch like I have been doing for the last week. (How good is that show!)

Thanks for popping by,

I’ll have to give this a go. My hair is feral. The last time i had it cut was 1 month before Mia was born, that means i have 17 months worth of split ends. I have the coconut oil & honey, i’ll just have to buy the gelatine.

Mon, this works really well, last time I had a cut was when I was 9 weeks pregnant so I really needed one. Your hair looks pretty good for having split ends! xoxo
