DIY Lip Stain Tutorial

July 20, 2012

DIY Lip Stain Recipe

Do you ever just wake up and think, I’m going to create my own DIY lip stain recipe?

No? Well luckily for you I did, and the result was actually a two for one deal. This little concoction doubles as both a lip stain and a cream lip colour. Happy days!

What is lip stain?

Lip stain basically makes your lips look like they have a nice red colour naturally, without looking like you’re wearing thick lipstick.

The idea is it stains your lips and leaves you free to wear no lippy or just some clear gloss without looking washed out.

I experimented with a lot of recipes, I mean A LOT. There are heaps of tutorials out there on how to make lip tint or stain, but none of them would work for me. Anything with oil in it just separated strangely after being mixed and anything with fresh fruit needed to be refrigerated. I cooked, I squashed, I strained and I spun but after everything the answer was simple.

A few drops of food colouring and some Lanolin (but you could use Vaseline or some other thick cream.)

Basically, I squeezed a blob of Lanolin into an old eyeshadow container, dipped a lip brush in some food colouring and mixed it in until I got my desired colour.

Then I painted it on my lips and left it for a few minutes before wiping it off. The result; I-just-naturally-am-this-colour-pink lips. I finished with some ultra shiny lip balm and BAM; $4 lip stain.

Before I wiped it off it looked like an ultra-bright cream lip colour which is not my cup of tea but if it’s yours, this technique is also perfect. You could even use some loose powder eyeshadow or broken pressed powder instead of food colouring to get a more subtle colour. Just experiment, Lanolin is your lips’ best friend!
