DIY pineapple stamp tutorial – Using craft foam

May 16, 2014

Who loves pineapples? I do and according to Pinterest, lots of you do to. This DIY pineapple stamp tutorial is simple, quick and really fun – so enjoy!!

DIY Pineapple stamp

Hmmm, so you like pineapples, so do I! And you like crafting on Friday nights. Me too! Wanna be friends? Or do you want to have a virtual craft-party? Yeah you do! Let's DIY up some Pineapple stamps, awesome, let's get started.

Materials

You need craft foam, a stamp pad with a flat clear lid*, tacky glue, scissors, cardboard and a sharp pencil. (you can use a wood block instead of the lid.) Everything I used is available at Spotlight, see details below.

Directions:

DIY Pineapple Stamp 1

Make a stencil of a pineapple shape by either drawing it freehand or if you aren't confident drawing, just open the image on a tablet or phone and trace it straight off the screen onto baking paper. Then flip the paper over on top of cardboard (so the side with the pencil on it is pressed up against the card) and transfer the pencil onto the cardboard by rubbing it with your finger. Next use a scissors to cut out the stencil so it looks like the one above. Repeat the process to make the pineapples hair (?) no idea what the top of a pineapple is called – note, find out.

Now take your stamp pad and press it on the stencil and foam like above so you have the outline of your stamp in ink on the foam.

And cut around the inky bit.

Using tacky glue, stick the two pieces of craft foam to the lid of your stamp pad, you can also use a wooden block but I found that having something clear can help you, especially when stamping fabric.

Use a sharp pencil (it wasn't sharp enough in the first picture) to draw the pattern of the pinapple skin (?) wow, I'm really not doing well on the anatomy of a pineapple. Start from the bottom and work your way up in a fish scale sort of pattern and then put a dot in the middle of each scale. The point of the pattern is to make sure that there are deep enough indents in the foam so the ink or paint doesn't touch – the pencil marks are the negative space on your stamp.

And your done, it's really pretty easy!

Tips

*Any indent you put in the foam will stay so double check your ink pad doesn't have a lip on the edge that will leave a mark in the foam. If it does, just take the squooshy inky bit out and place it on a piece of paper and use it that way.

**Craft foam isn't the toughest of mediums. If you want to use something that will last longer you can always carve the shape out of rubber but this is much harder to do.

*These stamps work great with paint on fabric too, check out my Upcycled Stamped Muslin Wrap tutorial and my hand stamped cactus fabric tutorial for more details.

I love your way of making stamps. I am right in the middle of making a Pineapple stamp with a rubber block and my hands are cut to buggery from carving lol – the things we do for a pineapple 😉 xx

That’s clever to use foam to make a stamp. If I had any need for a pineapple stamp, I’d be in there like a shot! It’s actually really just so nice to be here. I’m going to have a look around and catch up. Oh and I think it’s called a crown… the pineapple top!! x

I might have to do this to make Punky some Peppa Pig stamps. Much cheaper than buying them ready made I reckon, and gives me yet another thing to keep me occupied in the evening while I watch TV rather than eat!

I’ve always looked at the stamp tutorials that use scalpels and thought “That’s a new and exciting way to injure myself!” This is a much more Amanda-friendly method!
Thanks for linking up with I’m Pinning Around. xx
