Six magazines you should totally be reading

Banging on about my favourite magazines: the fashion, the food, the design and the good-for-your-soul. The gossip free with nary an airbrushed ass cheek in sight, so grab a cuppa while share my favourite paper places of withdrawal.

Today I'm going to bang on about my favourite magazines because it's raining and we have out fire lit, in JANUARY.  

Oh yeah baby, the fashion, the food, the design and the good-for-your-soul. The gossip free with nary an airbrushed ass cheek in sight, so grab a cuppa while share my favourite paper places of withdrawal. 

Sweet Magazine

It’s like Pinterest in a book, think beautiful parties, sweet recipes and seriously cool features. The photography and styling is total next level and it’s laid out so beautifully that you may be lured in to believe that your child’s next birthday will be pin-worthy. The rebel in me loves to see sugar-full recipes and the kid in me wants to eat it all. If I’m totally honest, this mag makes me deluded, after reading it I usually feel like I could smash Martha Stewart in a bake-off.

Bi-monthly, teeth hurty, and a bit Wonka. 

Lunch Lady

This blog turned magazine/cookbook is one for the kitchen shelf. Because ninety percent of parenting is basically making lunch and snacks; marring parenting and food in a cute publication is freaking genius. Don’t expect advice on specific parenting issues though, it’s about raw and real stories from interesting parents who are doing cool stuff. There are heaps of recipes, from peach ice cream to sandwich pesto as well as quirky vintage illustrations and infographics; all through a retroesque filter of warm fuzzies.

Quarterly, sickeningly cool, practical. 

Fete

It’s basically all about simplicity and joy. I mean it’s about lots of things but those two words kind of sum it up perfectly. If you want to host beautiful events but are not interested in sewing bunting – if you love style but do not care what the starlets are wearing, if you prefer your magazine pages not to give you seizures…. This is your gal. It’s effortless. Recipes, awesome design, playlists, features and beautiful photography. If Fete was an outfit it would be converse, boyfriend jeans, a fresh white tee and some sort of handmade designer chunky necklace. You know what I mean? 

Bi-monthly, minimalistic, painfully stylish.

Frankie

I have subscribed to Frankie for so long that my bedside table is actually just a huge pile of this magazine. True story. And it’s solid which might give you an idea of the paper quality we are talking about. It’s made up of amazing Aussie and international design, cute opinion pieces and quirky ideas with a bit of craft, fashion and food thrown in. Cross grandma’s Anzac slice with a sleeve full of bird tattoos and you’re on the right track. Oh plus every issue comes with pull out calendars and posters and sometimes even gift tags and fancy paper.

Bi-monthly, lo-fi and oh so freakin cute.  

Yen

Fashion, beauty, art, music and lots of interesting-people-profiles. Every page is jammers with cool products, looks and tips. I do love the fluff in this magazine, it’s just alternative enough to separate it from the glossies but not so out there that you’re still not sure who you’re reading about after you have finished. The reason this magazine is one of my faves thought is the seriously rad feature journalism they create. It makes me smile. 

Bi-monthly, fresh, fun and a bit wild.

Flow

I picked this magazine up in an airport on my way to a bloggy conference and I honestly believe that the two hours I spent pouring over it completely changed my mindframe walking in. Any anxiety, anticipation or vague (extremely vague) keeping-up-with-the-Joneses desires I had were pretty quickly bumped. The hand painted illustrations, the etiquetty-mindfulness, gratitude boosting content is so…so European. Probably because it is European. Think features on low-brow artists, workbook style pages to fill in (about happiness, friends and gratitude), a pull out black and white poster of John Travolta in 1984 and other such random perfection.

Wacky, pretty and good for the soul.
