I don’t always arrive at picnics with fancy ass cupcakes and well dressed kids. Sometimes we arrive to the BBQ, by bike, kids dressed in a PJ’s carrying a $3 dish that can be made, whilst bouncing a baby on your hip, in about 7 minutes. And sometimes we manage to leave the meat at home and end up having to scab sausages off our friends.
Sometimes this world of blogging we can create illusions, and sometimes I worry that I am part of something that puts more pressure on Mums than they already have. So this post is a confession of sorts because I confess, I was sitting here looking at this screen and thinking that I wasn't going to post this recipe because it was a bit boring, a bit Captain Obvious, a bit lame.
My aim here on Patchwork Cactus is to share things that make me happy, things I love and little tricks I have gathered along the way. I want to contribute, albeit superficially to my gorgeous readers lives by showing how I bring creativity and fun into our family life.
But the reality is, and this would be the confession part, that I don't always arrive at picnics with fancy ass cupcakes and well dressed kids. Sometimes we arrive to the BBQ, by bike, kids dressed in a PJ's carrying a $3 dish that can be made, whilst bouncing a baby on your hip, in about 7 minutes. And sometimes we manage to leave the meat at home and end up having to scab sausages off our friends.
That said, all of a sudden this recipe now seems more valid than anything I have ever posted before, because something that can be made quickly, with little money out of ingredients you probably already have on hand is the best type of tip to share. I call this Bub-On-The-Hip Pasta. Alternatively known as called Cut-Yourself-Some-Slack Pasta.
Recipe
Pop some pasta in a pot, put some bacon in a pan, when they are done; chuck them all in a bowl with some pesto. Stir.
Things you could add to make it a fancy blog worthy recipe:
Sundried tomatoes, spinach leaves, grated parmesan, boccachini, olive oil
Things I added to it:
Salad servers and a side of beer.
And it tasted like sweet, Sunday afternoon by the water with friends. Watching kids ride their bikes and chasing ducks away from our food.
Photo credit goes to Pinch Me Beautiful who bought an AMAZING, totally blog worthy rice salad, turned up with well dressed kids. And didn't forget the meat.

Cool idea for a cooking series, Babs. “Bub on the hip” – so familiar! You could morph it into cleaning too – with Max I did EVERYTHING with a bub on the hip and everyone would ask me “how do you get anything done”, well, maybe you can show them! x
Cate
