Putting the first touches on a completely blank room is something I have never got to do before. This little Kmart shadow box hack was the perfect first project.
When I had Scout, we were living in a one bedroom apartment, I set up a beautiful little nursery corner, we picked a paint colour for the cot, bought a set of shelves and washi taped some Frankie Mag posters to the wall. It was perfect and all she needed. Two years later, when Squawk was on the way, I did the same, I just swapped the poster for a feather garland.
Even though we were living in a big house at that point I knew I wanted him close and so again, there was no nursery, as my aunt Grania says, all they need is a drawer to sleep in.
Since we put an offer on our own place the day he was born (I was literally signing papers in bed just before I went into full blown labour) we have been holding off on doing anything to it. But now after a year in our home the renovations have began and I have gone from a taping-things-to-walls sorta decorator to someone who is making decisions about skirting board style. Ummm, when did I become an actual adult?
Right now we are just doing the bedrooms, our bedroom and a shared room for the kids. Later on when we do an extension they will become two kid's rooms so we want them to be similar in style. In the little people room the walls are white and the bed is wood and it is the most perfect little blank canvas ever. The carpet goes in on Wednesday and hopefully the ever wonderful Pac Man will get their Ikea wardrobe in the week after that. Far out, I'm so excited!
As far as decorating goes it will be gradual, DIY and pretty low key. The first and only item in the room is this cute little black shadowbox? It's actually a Kmart hack that took me about 5 minutes. I just grabbed one of their $9 shadow boxes and sprayed with some $2.95 spraypaint. Then I added some Sonny Angels and an Omm Design Word Banner and BAM! I have the first bit of decoration in my kid's new room.
I have some really cute ideas, most of which are on the Pinterest board below and a bit dream-world but the next item on my actual hitlist are these wall stickers. I'm so glad that I am decorating a room for 'kids' because they grow out of nurseries so quick and this one is going to be around for a while.
I don't even have to write out a tutorial for the shadow box. You don't even have to prep or tape the shelf. (The one I used was actually just white, it didn't have any of the patterns on it) it seriously took me about five minutes and there was enough paint left over to do a few more shelves.
Happy Monday xox

How did I miss you on Pinterest?! Situation rectified. Love this, I saw some similar shadow box thingies there over the weekend and ummed and ahhed about what I’d do with it, cos I knew I sort of needed it somehow… Better run back there and buy one!

I need to do this to the one i bought for Mia’s room. I got the last one at our local Kmart on her birthday eve to fill with vintage smurfs. The one i bought was a bit dirty which i’m assuming is why it was the only one left. I will just have to decide on a colour?
